CPT 87798 ~ amplified probe tech each organism

Laureen,

A provider is billing 87798 for each of these labs: 87661, 87653, 87640 and 87591. These codes are not listed under 87797 which is the infectious agent detection by nucleic acid which then they could be 87798 for each organism.

The codes above are all by direct probe but should the provider bill 87798 for each of these?

I think we would just need medical records on this one.. they are billing probe technique ~ 87798 we just need to verify by medical records. thanks.

Laureen Jandroep discussed this during the December 2015 Q&A Webinar. Basically, 87798 should only be used if the organism being tested doesn't have its own code. If you have 4 organisms that have their own code report them as you have listed (above) and any ADDITIONAL ones that don't have their own code use a unit of 87798. 87798 is for Infectious agent detection by nucleic acid (DNA or RNA), not otherwise specified; amplified probe technique, each organism.
