Could you discuss the basic differences between CPC and COC and if a student can study for both exams at the same time? I know that there are separate exams for them. Also, is it a wide chasm to also obtain the inpatient hospital credential? Thank you.

The COC covers everything the CPC does with the addition testing your knowledge of outpatient reimbursement methodologies like the OPPS (Outpatient Prospective Payment System). And yes you can study for both at the same time because it really is a simlar exam with the "H" just having questions on payment issues.

The inpatient hospital credential CCS is in my opinion the most difficult exam and yes a pretty wide chasm o difference in coding compared to physician / outpatient based.

Does the COC exam follow the same format as the CPC? The same books? Five hours and 40 minutes also?

Hi Michele - It is a 5 hour 40 minute exam with 150 questions. But obviously the content of the questions is a bit different. And yes you use the same manuals.

It's all laid out here on this page https://www.aapc.com/certification/coc/

Notice the tabs with approved manual info etc.

Happy Coding!
