What Is On The CPC Exam? | Advice For RCC Coders

Q: (What Is On The CPC Exam?) – “I’m taking CPC in May; I have only been a radiology (RCC) coder for 25 years” – only? – “Is this test exclusively multiple choice?”

A: Yes. The CPC Exam is multiple choice.

Q: “I have been taking practice tests & a couple have been op reports.”

A: They normally will give you an op report, probably normally a shortened one where
they call a scenario and they’ll give you multiple choice A, B, C, D for you to show them that you know what the correct coding is for that. Oftentimes, on the CPC exam, they can have, like, answer “A” have four codes in it, answer “B” have four codes in it; so it’s not like one code per answer. That’s what makes it challenging.

  1. Remember with all questions, your job is to pick the best answer. Follow Lareen’s tips she uses in her Blitz videos to eliminate wrong codes, then chose the best answer out of the possible four.

  2. Eliminating the wrong answers can be tricky — you must read the documentation very, very carefully. One word missing or added to what the description truly says can lead you to an incorrect code. Be prepared to cross off specific words as you find them to ensure you are actually seeing them correctly. Our brains have a tendency to read what we expect to see rather than what is actually written at times.

  3. Greetings! The bubble and highlight technique is something I have used for years thanks to Laureen. I have used this technique to quickly identify the CPT choices during testing and obtaining my coding credentials over the years. I have even incorporated it into ICD10-CM. The CPC exam I took back in 2003 when it was still scan sheets using a No. 2 pencil. At least back then I recall it was multiple choice, and tests you on all sections of the CPT manual, coding guidelines, and conventions. I wish you all the very best and that you pass with flying colors!
