Question:

Between a Medical Coder position and a Health Information Technician position, which typically has more stress and responsibility as in being in charge and having more tasks?

Answer:

When you compare these two titles and certifications it is sort of like comparing apples and oranges. Both are fruit. The are different though. Medical coders and HIT both have minimal patient contact but a lot of provider contact. Meaning you will be talking with the physician a lot. Coders deal with billing and coding and HIT works with the medical record.

The difference is that RHITs have an associate degree. Coders don't have to have a degree. Most places like for people in managment to have a degree. Therefor if you are looking for a management role RHIT may be what you are looking for. Both deal with coding and medical records. In my experience RHITs do less in coding and more in the records level.
