Your CCO Academy textbook is more than something you read. You can highlight passages, keep your own notes, share insights with classmates, and flag anything that looks wrong so our editors can fix it. This guide shows you how.
Finding Your Way Around
At the top of every chapter you will see a row of buttons:
Contents opens the full table of contents. Click any chapter or section to jump straight to it.
Search lets you search the entire book by keyword.
Display changes how the page looks. Choose a text size (Small, Normal, Large, Larger, Largest), a page color (Light or Sepia), and a font style (Serif or Sans).
Marks lets you bookmark the section you are reading so you can come back to it later. Click Bookmark this section inside the Marks panel.
Notes opens the notes panel on the right side of the page. This is where all your highlights and notes for the current chapter live.
When you finish a chapter, use the link at the bottom of the page to go on to the next one.
Highlighting a Passage
Click and drag across any text in the chapter to select it.
A bar appears at the bottom of the screen showing the text you selected.
Next to Highlight, click one of the three colors: yellow, green, or purple.
The passage is now highlighted on the page and saved in the Yours section of the Notes panel. Highlights start as Private, so only you can see them. Use different colors to organize your study, for example yellow for key definitions, green for exam topics, and purple for things you want to review again.
Changed your mind? Click Cancel on the bottom bar to deselect without saving.
Managing Your Highlights
Every highlight shows up as a card in the Notes panel. Each card has these buttons:
Private keeps the highlight visible only to you.
Shared makes it visible to other students reading the same chapter.
To editor sends the passage to the CCO editorial team for review.
Delete removes the highlight completely.
Click the quoted text on any card to jump back to that spot in the chapter. You can switch a highlight between Private, Shared, and To editor at any time.
Sharing Highlights With Your Class
To share a highlight, create it first, then click Shared on its card in the Notes panel. The label on the card changes to Shared, and the passage shows a small underline on the page so you know it is shared.
Classmates’ shared highlights appear in the Shared by Other Students section of the Notes panel. Reading them is a good way to see what other learners found important. Please note that shared notes come from students and are not reviewed by CCO Academy, so always check them against the textbook and the official code books.
Adding Notes (Annotations)
The bottom bar that appears when you select text also includes Add private note, Share with class, and Send to editor. These are meant to let you attach your own written comment to a passage.
Note: this feature is still being built. Right now, clicking these buttons shows the message “Please write something in your note,” but no box appears for you to type in. Until it is fixed, highlight the passage first and then use the Shared or To editor button on the highlight’s card in the Notes panel.
Reporting an Error to the Editor
If you spot something that looks wrong, such as an outdated code, a typo, or a statement that conflicts with official guidance, let us know:
Select the passage and highlight it in any color.
Open the Notes panel and find the highlight’s card.
Click To editor.
The card moves to the Sent to Editor section so you can keep track of what you have reported in that chapter. Because you cannot yet add a written explanation to the flag, it helps to also send a short description of the problem through CCO Support (see below), including the chapter name and the text you highlighted.
Getting Help, Reporting Bugs, and Requesting Features
The online textbook is still in development, and we are improving it all the time. Your feedback shapes what we build next.
Click the purple CCO Support button in the lower right corner of any page. You will see four options:
My support room is your private conversation with the CCO team.
Ask a question gets you an answer from the CCO help desk.
Report a bug is for anything that is not working the way it should, such as a button that does nothing, a page that will not load, or a highlight that disappears.
Request a feature is for ideas that would make studying easier.
When you report a bug, tell us which chapter you were in, what you clicked, and what happened. A screenshot helps too.
Quick Tips
Highlights and notes are saved per chapter. Open the Notes panel in each chapter to see what you have saved there.
Use Marks to bookmark sections you want to come back to, and highlights for specific sentences.
Private is the default, so nothing is shared unless you choose to share it.
Happy studying, and thank you for helping us make this textbook better.
