What books do I actually need to sit for the CPC exam?

Short answer: You do not need every book listed on the CCO books page to sit for the CPC exam. Only a few official references are required on exam day.

Required to test for the AAPC CPC

  • AMA CPT Professional for the current exam year
  • An ICD-10-CM manual from any publisher
  • An HCPCS Level II manual from any publisher

Recommended for CCO prep

  • CCO course and Blitz book lists are designed to help you prepare, but they are not all required for exam day.

Optional extras

  • Study guides and review books may be helpful, but they are not required just to test.

Important notes

  • You may purchase books from any vendor as long as the ISBNs match.
  • For the current CCO recommended book lists, use the CCO books page and the Recommended Textbooks, Manuals & FAQ page.
  • If you are testing online or in person, always confirm the latest AAPC exam-day resource rules before exam day.
