Organic Insomnia versus Non-organic Insomnia

Ruth- one of our students- wanted to get an explanation of organic insomnia versus non-organic insomnia. She tried to look up in the dictionary to get the definition but it didn’t help her. So what we did was we looked up.

But we changed what we looked up. We looked up organic disease instead of organic insomnia. And here is what it tells us, “Any disease in which there’s a physical change in the structure of an organ.”

Okay so the example that we gave you, that I put up on our slide, if Laureen can show us, was that if a person had hypothyroidism, they can’t sleep. That’s one of the symptoms and that’s an organic insomnia. It’s caused by something that’s wrong with the body. And like drinking too much caffeine you know, 3 cups of coffee before you went to bed, there wasn’t a physical change in the body or the tissue or organ that caused you to have insomnia. So the difference is that there’s a physical change in the body that caused the condition. And that’s what organic insomnia means or organic. Any disease that’s an organic disorder or disease versus a non-organic.
