What Exactly Is Risk Adjustment / HCC Coding?

In brief risk adjustment coding is done using a special code set, by auditing a previous year’s worth of an individual’s medical documentation to confirm chronic conditions so that a dollar amount can be predicted for that patient’s care in the future year.

Due to its success with Medicare many private payers are using this method as well causing and increase in demand for Risk Adjustment coders. So much so that many companies will hire newly certified coders and even provide initial addition training to get them up to speed.
