New to medical coding and not sure where to start? Here’s a quick way to match a CCO course to your goal. The right choice depends on the credential you’re aiming for and where you are in your journey.
If you’re brand new and want a strong foundation first, start with MTA (Medical Terminology & Anatomy). It builds the vocabulary and body-system knowledge every coder needs before tackling the code sets.
If your goal is the AAPC CPC (physician/outpatient coding) — the most common starting credential — the PBC (Physician-Based Coding) course is your core CPC prep. Many newcomers pair MTA + PBC together, which is exactly what our MTA + PBC bundle is for.
Aiming at a different credential? Here’s the quick map:
• CPC (physician/outpatient) → PBC
• COC (outpatient facility) → FBC (Facility-Based Coding)
• CPB (billing) → PBB (Physician-Based Billing)
• CPMA (auditing) → PBMA (Physician-Based Medical Auditing)
• CPPM (practice management) → PPM
• CRC (risk adjustment / HCC) → RAC (Risk Adjustment Coding)
• ICD-10-CM / ICD-10-PCS skills → the dedicated ICD-10 courses
Already studying and just want to pass the exam? A Review Blitz is a focused, fast-paced exam refresher — great alongside a full course or if you trained elsewhere.
Want hands-on, real-world practice? The MCP (Medical Coding Practicum) with Practicode helps bridge the gap between studying and a coding job.
Still not sure which path fits your goals, background, or timeline? That’s exactly what we’re here for. Open the AI Help Desk chat bubble in the bottom-right corner of the cco.us home page or inside CCO Academy, tell us your goal (the credential you want or the kind of coding job you’re after), and we’ll point you to the best starting course — or connect you with a person to talk it through.
