Core Medical Coding Courses

Quick orientation: Physician/ProFee (PBC) covers professional-fee outpatient encounters billed on the CMS-1500 form (physician offices, clinic visits). Facility/Outpatient (FBC) covers hospital outpatient and ASC coding billed on the UB-04 form, including OPPS/APCs and the Charge Description Master.

Which medical coding certification should I get first?

For most new coders, the CPC (Certified Professional Coder) is the best first medical coding certification, since it covers physician/ProFee coding and is the most widely requested credential by employers. How long does it take to become a medical coder?

Most students complete their medical coding training in about 4 to 12 months, depending on whether they study full time or part time and how much prior healthcare experience they have. CCO’s self-paced online courses let you move at your own speed, and pairing a course with a review blitz can shorten your time to exam readiness.

Do I need a full course or just a review blitz to pass the CPC exam?

It depends on your starting point. A full medical coding course teaches you how to code from the ground up, while a CCO Review Blitz is an exam boot camp for coders who already know the material and need focused, exam-day preparation. If you are brand new, start with a course; if you have training and just need to pass, a blitz plus practice exams is often enough.

What is the difference between the CPC and COC certifications?

The CPC (Certified Professional Coder) focuses on physician and professional-fee (ProFee) coding in outpatient physician settings, while the COC (Certified Outpatient Coder) focuses on outpatient facility coding such as hospital outpatient departments and ambulatory surgery centers. Both are respected AAPC credentials; the right one depends on where you want to work.

Are CCO courses approved for AAPC CEUs?

AAPC does not approve courses for CEUs but we do have CEUs from AAPC for our webinar content to aidin maintaining credentials once earned.

Can I study medical coding online at my own pace?

Which medical coding certification is best for remote, work-from-home jobs?

The CPC is the most commonly requested credential for remote medical coding positions, and adding credentials such as the CRC (risk adjustment) or a CDI or auditing certification can further improve your remote job prospects. Employers generally look for a nationally recognized certification plus demonstrated coding accuracy.
