How Much Can I Make in Medical Billing Services?

Having taught medical billing for the past 7 years, I am frequently asked how much a medical biller can make doing medical billing. The answer to this question is dependent on many factors including what type of facility one works for, where in the country one lives, and how much experience and/or certifications does one have.

A brand new medical biller just graduated from a medical billing course working in a clinic or doctor’s office can usually earn between $12-$14 an hour. There are parts of the country that need skilled workers and would pay toward the high end of this scale. Ads in my area, New Mexico, pay toward the high end.   A medical biller working in a hospital setting may earn a bit more.  With national certification such as the American Association of Professional Coders now offers, pay may be even higher. Also, once a medical biller has experience in the field of medical billing, they can expect earnings to increase. It’s a great field to get into because the training time is short (about 8-12 weeks), and income it pretty good.

Other jobs exist for medical billers who have some experience in medical billing. Becoming a medical auditor is a wonderful career. Usually auditors have a few years of medical billing experience. They go into practices and audit past claims to make sure that the claims were processed accurately. They then make recommendations to the practice manager for improvement. Jobs also exist with health insurance companies such as claims adjudicators. This is where a medical biller would review the claims submitted and then make a decision on paying the claim or denying it. Again, these positions are usually offered to those medical billers who have a few years of medical billing experience.   Medical billing is a great career choice with a relatively short training time and investment of money, and the jobs are out there for qualified personnel.
