Can Anyone Take the CPC Exam?

Can Anyone Take the CPC ExamCan Anyone Take the CPC Exam?

Question: Hi, I’m a stay at home mom wanting to get back into the work force.  I’m interested in getting certified as a coder.  But I have no background experience in this field at all.  My question is…what is the job prospect for a CPCs?  And since I have no experience in this field can anyone take the exam?  Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Answer: Thanks for your question about the CPC Exam.  Anyone can take the CPC Exam but of course it is not recommended if you don’t have any training or experience as you would likely fail the CPC Exam and waste your money.  A better plan is to take a CPC Certification Course followed by a CPC Exam Review just before sitting for your CPC Exam.  That way you will be best prepared.

If you have no experience you would apply for the CPC-A credential – that is the apprentice level.  Once you have two years experience you could then submit some letters of proof and ask that you be made a full fledged CPC (without the -A).  The CPC exam is the same exam you take for the CPC-A credential. So if you have been coding or took a course and just need a review before sitting for the exam check out the Blitz videos for COC exam preparation – otherwise consider a full fledged coding course first.

    • After you complete your course, you need to register and sit for the AAPC’s CPC Exam. Once you pass that CPC exam, yes, you are officially certified as a CPC-A.

  6. I worked as a Medical Coder for many years before you had to be certified. I am a Registered Nurse now. I would like to take the CPC Exam. How do I go about doing this?

    • Hi there! It’s great that you have experience as a medical coder and are now a registered nurse.

Technically speaking, anyone can take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam without any pre-requisites. You just need to purchase a CPC exam attempt through the AAPC and sit for it.

Now passing it is another question entirely!

First you need to gauge your current level of knowledge. For that, take our Free CPC Exam at https://www.cco.us/free-cpc-online-practice-exam/ and if you score a 70% or greater, you might be able to take the Medical Coding Review Blitz at https://www.cco.us/medical-coding-certification-cpc-review-blitz/ to refresh, refine and review your knowledge of medical coding along with some practice exams at https://www.cco.us/cpc-practice-exam/.

If you score less than 70%, you might need to revisit a Medical Coding Course like our PBC Course at https://www.cco.us/medical-coding-course-online/ to get reacquainted with changes and relearn concepts.

Once you do pass the exam, you’ll have a “CPC-A”. To get that “A” removed, you’ll need 2 years of coding experience which can be confirmed by an employer. You can also use a full coding course (like ours above) to remove 1 year from the 2 year requirement. The other year can come from actual work experience, an internship or using something like Practicode to remove it.

Regardless of your choice, we wish you the very best luck on your journey! Let me know if you have any other questions! I’m happy to help.
