Need Health Insurance – Understanding Health Insurance Text Review

The textbook Understand Health Insurance by Michelle A. Green and JoAnn C. Rowell is a comprehensive and gold-standard text used to teach medical billing.  I have taught medical billing using this text for many years and this article will explain what the book contains and why I think it’s a great text for teaching medical billing.

  • CPT Coding
  • HCPCS Level II Coding

The UHI text also comes with some companion materials like a workbook,  companion website, and simulation software.  Not all medical coding courses that use this text will use all of the companion resources as they are an “additional” reference source.  In the CCO program, we have students work 2 chapters a week. They read the chapter in the book, do the review activity from the book, then go online to view a recorded-live webinar.  Then, they take a chapter final exam, and move on to the next chapter.  Staying motivated and working the material each week is important in building momentum. The book can be completed in about 10-12 weeks, which is a comparatively short training time toward a new career.  I enjoy working with the UHI text because I find it comprehensive in nature, well written, and a good use of charts, and visuals to help pull the information together.  I encourage my students to read the text with a highlighter pen in hand and to highlight important information as they go along.
